“Gender, Redistricting, and Other Aspects of Election 2002,” a new study conducted by Beloit College political scientist Georgia Duerst-Lahti, finds that the expansion of women’s representation in American legislatures appears to be losing ground. The report concludes, “the most prominent facet of gender and election 2002 is the fact that when it is over men will still overwhelmingly rule.”

This United Nations’ report from the twenty-third special session (June 2000) apprises the progress made in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action and outlines further actions for overcoming obstacles in the Platform’s implementation. The Beijing Platform for Action identified 12 critical areas of concern, as follow: women and poverty, education and training of women, women and health, violence against women, women and armed conflict, women and the economy, women in power and decision-making, institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women, human rights of women, women and the media, women and the environment, and the girl child.
